Hall had asked the F.B.I. for help searching the jail. The F.B.I. enlisted Customs and Border Protection, which uses advanced electromagnetic scanners to search suspect vehicles. Crime-scene investigators bored holes and pulled out a succession of neat plastic packages containing razors, saw blades, handcuff keys, and security bits. The prosecutors called these “escape kits.”
